Gennadiy Онищенко is an academic and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, serving as Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education. He has publicly commented on public health issues, advising Russians against foreign summer travel due to climate change risks and infectious disease threats such as melioidosis. He also advocated for making 8 July (Day of Family, Love and Faith) a nationwide holiday rather than one restricted to large families.
