Закарпатье is a region in Ukraine where a significant Hungarian minority resides. The region has been at the center of diplomatic tensions between Hungary and Ukraine due to disputes over the rights of the Hungarian ethnic group, particularly regarding language, education, and cultural policies. In 2025, an agreement was reached restoring Hungarian minority rights in Закарпатье, leading Hungary to agree to begin EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. The region has also been mentioned in connection with historical events involving political repression and the treatment of ethnic Hungarians.
