Mashhad is described as the birthplace of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and is considered the second most significant religious city in Iran after Qom. It is the site of the shrine of Imam Reza, where Khamenei was buried on July 9 following mourning ceremonies held across several Iranian cities. The burial took place at the mausoleum of Imam Reza in northeastern Iran, a major center of Shia Islamic pilgrimage.
