Vyaacheslav Gladkov served as Governor of Belgorod Oblast from November 2020 until May 2026. He was appointed by President Vladimir Putin as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Abkhazia in June 2026, succeeding Mikhail Shurgalin. His appointment followed a recommendation from the State Duma committee on matters related to the Commonwealth of Independent States. Gladkov had previously been noted for his effectiveness during challenging conditions, including during the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
