Mashhad is described as the birthplace of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and is home to the shrine of Imam Reza, a major center of Shia Islamic pilgrimage. The city hosted the burial ceremonies for Ali Khamenei following his death in February during U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Iran, with reports indicating that at least one million people attended the procession through its streets. The funeral concluded with Khamenei being buried in the Imam Reza Shrine complex in Mashhad.
