Uruguay is a country that hosted the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, with matches held in its capital, Montevideo. It participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of Group H, finishing third with two points after draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, and a loss to Spain; the team was eliminated and their charter flight was canceled following their exit. The country has also been noted for paleontological discoveries, including a new species of giant dinosaur, Mesetasaurus protector, found in northern Uruguay.
