Mikhail Balashov was a leader of an extremist cell associated with the banned terrorist organization NS/WP Crew, involved in planning the assassination of journalist Margarita Simonyan. He and his accomplice Egor Savelyev were ordered by unknown individuals to observe Simonyan's residence and workplace in exchange for 50,000 rubles. Balashov was arrested in July 2023 while attempting to retrieve a Kalashnikov rifle and ammunition from a hidden cache. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with Savelyev receiving 15 years.
