Eugene Khmara was appointed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to temporarily serve as Minister of Defense of Ukraine in July 2024, following the resignation of former Minister Mikhail Fedorov. He was officially confirmed by the Verkhovna Rada with 312 votes in favor and became the fifth defense minister since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. Prior to this appointment, Khmara served as the acting head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).
