Ratko Mladic, former commander of Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2017 on 10 of 11 charges, including genocide and crimes against humanity linked to the Srebrenica massacre and siege of Sarajevo. He died on August 27 in a United Nations detention center in The Hague at age 84 while serving a life sentence.
