Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine, was detained in Voronezh, Russia, in January 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of assaulting law enforcement and prison staff. He was released in August 11, 2023, under a Russian presidential amnesty granted on humanitarian grounds due to his severe health condition, and returned to the United States with assistance from U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff. Russian President Vladimir Putin described him as a 'drunk and a troublemaker' with poor health and stated no exchange was made for his release.
