Vячеслав Гладков served as governor of Belgorod Oblast from November 2020 until his resignation on May 13, 2026. He was appointed by President Vladimir Putin as Russia's Ambassador to Abkhazia on June 26, 2026, following approval by the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs and other international relations. According to media reports, he expressed personal interest in the diplomatic appointment.
