Bashar al-Assad, the former President of Syria, was overthrown in December 2024 after an opposition offensive captured Damascus, after which he fled to Russia with his family. A Syrian court issued a death sentence in absentia in August 2024 for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 14-year civil war. Russia stated it granted him political asylum for humanitarian reasons, not political motives, and has reaffirmed its decision not to reconsider the asylum status.
