Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia

A Syrian court in Damascus sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia for crimes against humanity, including killings, torture, and arbitrary arrests during the 2011 uprising in Deraa and the subsequent civil war. Assad fled to Moscow in December 2024 and is currently living there under Russian protection.
