Bashar al-Assad, the former President of Syria, was overthrown in December 2014 and fled to Russia. A Syrian court sentenced him in absentia to death on August 11, 2025, for crimes including mass killings, torture, and other crimes against humanity committed during the civil war, according to multiple Russian-language media sources including SANA and RIA Novosti.
